ABLIC comes from combining ABLE (possible) and IC (integrated circuit). It means semiconductor technology enables possibilities. After becoming independent of Seiko Instruments Inc. in January 2016, ABLIC has been operating as a maker of analog semiconductors under its current name since January 2018. Then in April 2020, ABLIC made a fresh start becoming a member of the MinebeaMitsumi Group. The origin of ABLIC products lies in the development of CMOS ICs for quartz watches. The company downsized quartz mechanisms from the size of a locker to something small enough to be worn on a wrist and succeeded in bringing to production analog semiconductors that function accurately while using only a minute amount of energy. ABLIC began in-house development and fabrication of CMOS ICs in 1970, based on the production of the world’s first practical quartz watches in which CMOS ICs were incorporated.
